May Star’s Fashion Whore Underwear Dance Party and Fashion Show

By Paola Hornbuckle

Feb 4, 2012- May Star’s monthly Fashion Whore  themed fashion and art show at The Ruby Room  has become quite the staple of San Diego’s fashion world. Imaginative and risqué productions at a small, deliciously seedy and unpretentious venue, it nevertheless has proved a long-standing outlet for fringe and up-and-coming fashion designers. The blatantly sexy, sometimes trashy, shows are a nice change from the “take yourself way too seriously” high fashion productions as the shows usually have a feel of the burlesque. May Star has proven herself to be a shrewd promoter and Fashion Whore does not seem like it’s going away any time soon.

This month’s underwear theme was as outrageous at it gets, with cross-dressing male models, almost topless female models (strips of tape on nipples and panties where about it) and crazy hair/makeup/ensembles, yes what else is new its Fashion Whore!
The designers featured this month were Jessica Logan, Felicia Lopez and Nikki Lipstick. The show went off to a great start with an exotic dancer accessorized by a live snake (yeah!) Jessica Logan’s designs featured some lace negligee’s, lots of prints, mini dresses in flashy-trashy polyester, zebra prints in canary yellow and black, corsets with Victorian curtain-like materials, and simple but cute cuts for dresses.

Felicia Lopez offered the oh-so popular now dresses with cut-outs, assymetrical pieces, funky details, and striped vests. There was a very burlesque-gothy look with frilly lace skirts, lace thigh-high stockings, biker boots and striped tops in red and black.
Nikki Lipstick was barely there with very little shorts, panties and bottoms, but I could not take my eyes of the topless models and the little strips of tape, some as little crosses, and with neat little designs…I just found myself looking at each’ models breasts as they bounced by - more than the underwear - which I’m sure was very cute. The crowd was certainly very appreciative!
All good fun, and ready for next month’s Fashion Whore for sure. Oh, I did find the male cross-dressing models did an outstanding job…they can really work a runway.
